In today's blog, I'll address Testosterone drop and how it effects aging. Something (aging) of which I'm very aware of ):

Now then, physicians that treat soldiers who have experienced defeat in combat, oddly enough, have given that defeat a name: "defeated army" syndrome. Although semantically odd, this syndrome is characterized by a significant lowering of serum testosterone levels. These days, resarch suggests that much less dramatic lifestyle changes can have a significant effect on male testosterone levels as well.

A study that I recently read, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology, followed 1,600 men in the Boston area for more than 17 years. Over time, the authors observed events and behaviors that appeared to speed up the expected loss of testosterone that comes as men get older.

Some testosterone-lowering events, like the death of a spouse, were beyond the control of the study subjects. However, the researchers observed that even small increases in body mass index (BMI) were associated with a drop in testosterone levels that was equivalent to 10 years of aging! Such changes in testosterone levels put men at substantially higher risk for diabetes, loss of muscle and bone mass, and if severe enough, sexual dysfunction, which is no surprise to old duffer Al.

The authors concluded that preventable factors, such as a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain, excessive alcohol use, and other behaviors can result in rapid declines in serum testosterone equivalent to a much more rapid aging process. This process can be prevented, however, by making appropriate lifestyle choices.

Yeah, like old Al is going to give up drinking? Not likely, folks, not likely! To borrow from the younger generation: Johnny Walker rocks! Oh, oh, time for a drink...

Anywho...I'm reminded of the words of another old duffer, Aristotle: "moderation in all things."

Time to do a bit more walking/jogging? Hell, Old Al gets plenty of that while casting about on the rivers for those damned fish that he never seems to catch. I walk about 10 miles a week retrieving flys that somehow? get hung up in the bushes, rocks, trees, dogs, and just about everything else and in between.

Maybe time to have your Testosterone level checked? Old Man Al thinks so.
